Liberty’s Mutual’s “LiMu Emu & Doug” campaign is still chugging along after more than four years. Here we meet Doug’s son, who looks and dresses exactly the same, and even has a mustache like his dad. Doug and LiMu Emu beam with pride as the son says goodbye to his uncle LiMu and drives away in his little kiddie car with Lil’ LiMu. He’s off to a bumpy start as he runs over a flower bed, and Doug warns him to stay off the freeways. As the spot ends, a little boy sings the famous “Liberty, Liberty, Liberty” tagline.

I had Liberty Mutual (also another name) for 30+ years and switched about 5 years ago after I had poor service after a water damage claim. I only like the cute little guy who nails “Liberty, Liberty, Liberty”.

You would think that that kid’s father would holler, “Hey, don’t drive over the flower bed!,” but, no, he just tells his son to stay off the freeway. Why does this commercial have that kid drive over the flower bed in the first place instead of having him stay on the sidewalk like any kid would normally do?

LOL.. kids are kids!! They don’t steer well on anything. My kids ran over my flower beds/bushes/tree learning to maneuver their own little battery cars or bicycles. Its a commercial.. get a grip!

My complaint is about the way the commercial was designed. Why have the kid drive over the flowers? That wasn’t necessary at all and looks stupid!
atelerixia says:
August 16, 2023 at 5:29 pm
The problem was not with the kid’s steering. It was with the design of this stupid commercial.

Wether or not the emus are real in the ads they did not become adorable until Doug jr arrived on the scene. This cemented the emus as more relatable for me, as a viewer. Very enjoyable to watch!

I don’t understand the video ad with the young boy. I can’t even understand what he said! Finally, why would an auto insurance company have an ad about someone that is destroying property?!

I dislike the whole “you only pay for what you need” assertion. They seemingly want folks to believe other insurance companies are charging their policy holders for coverage they don’t need. I haven’t had a claim in many years – does that mean Liberty would have charged me nothing, since I didn’t need any coverage? How do they know what I will need (other than what the law requires)?

Here’s another goofy thing about this commercial: Why do they have the boy get into his kiddiecar on the passenger side? No kid who’s going to drive his car would get in on that side. That makes no sense at all.

Some of you guys are taking this too serious. Maybe the ad was filmed in the UK. Also this is a kid. Kids don’t always do things like an adult. My sister ran into the side of our house…in real life. With her first bike. It’s just a commercial with a cute kid an some emus. Get over yourself.

The steering wheel in the kid’s car is on the left side, i.e., like in all cars in the U.S.

Liberty designed a 20 second commercial to entertain, to be remembered and mostly to encourage people to talked about it. They accomplished their goal. It is proven that even bad comments can be good advertising by keeping their name before the public. Though this is one of their best commercials. It is fresh, draws on both old characters and everyone ones loves cute kids. A Father passing down to his son. Yes! It is overly simplistic in its story and attempt to connect with an audience and attempt to make people laugh. All in less then 20 seconds NO I don’t work for this agency but I was in advertising many years ago.
Though I admit I asked myself why the boy ran over the flowers too! Yet.It is a commercial about insurance… to cover accidents. A suttle referrance to the company’s product.
As to the child getting on the opposite side then what we do in the USA. Well the last time I remember the child side motorized vehicle had the steering wheel is closer to the center. Thekids climbed in on the side they wanted.
SMILE, LAUGH, RELAX… ITS MET TO ENTERTAIN. I too love the kiddie car.Reply

C. Wiggins, the steering wheel in the boy’s kiddiecar is definitely on the left side; it’s not in the middle. That’s why the boy’s getting in on the right side makes no sense. at all.

W.C. Fields said something to the effect of “Never work with children or animals.” Liberty Mutual has gone against that advice with this commercial and the more recent commercial with the dog walker, which is the first Liberty Mutual commercial I’ve ever liked.

Liberty Mutual commercials get worse and worse. They should fire their ad agency. The kid’s character, a new addition, is idiotic. The only thing positive about these ads is the Emu. I’d change insurance companies if I were an LM client. Embarrassingly horrible ads.
